CALAIS-DOVER, A SEA BRIDGE

Together with the Port of Dover, the Port of Calais provides the infrastructures and facilities for a fast-turnaround shipping route. As the fourth largest French cargo port, Calais handles one third of all cargo traded between continental Europe and the British Isles.

Each year, 1.7 million tonnes of LGVs pass through the port of Calais.

The lively pace of sea links – over forty ferries cross the channel each day – makes it possible for almost 1.7 million LGVs to quickly deliver to the United Kingdom each year, 24/7, 364 days of the year. This frequency is possible thanks to the exceptional location of the Port of Calais, and particularly due the quality of its cross-Channel terminal facilities. In fact, the Port of Calais offers the largest shipping capacity with the destination of Dover, both in terms of ship length and frequency of departures. It therefore limits waiting times for drivers.

The cross-Channel terminal has a streamlined traffic plan to ensure smooth circulation and facilitate and secure loading and off-loading. Major work has been carried out on the terminal to best absorb traffic and make it possible to reach the loading area car parks from the motorway in around fifteen minutes.

To guarantee safe, quick transport flows

The extent of checks is explained by an obsession with the smoothness of traffic within the port. For this reason, the Port anticipated the set up of systems and procedures to ensure the safety and security of cargo and passengers. Today, this is becoming a benchmark in the field. Our attention to excellence and performance helps our customers avoid those legal issues with the British authorities and business difficulties with shippers which can be caused by intruders aboard the vehicles.
