COLLECTING AND SORTING PORT WASTE

An initiative to improve and streamline port waste management has been undertaken for several years.

The cost of waste decreased by 28% between 2008 and 2009 thanks to better management of waste disposal and better preliminary sorting.

Port services are responsible for collecting the waste in dedicated areas and to keep records specifying waste tonnage by type and location. Waste treatment and disposal are then carried out by approved companies.

Collectors are distributed throughout the site to sort paper and non-hazardous or hazardous waste

Waste paper collectors are placed in each administrative service in order to recover sheets, filing folders, envelopes, newspapers, catalogues, etc. . On the site, other collectors are specific to non-hazardous waste such as common industrial waste (CIW), paper/cardboard, metals, wood, glass, plastics, etc. Finally, some collectors accommodate only sorted hazardous waste including oils, solvents, fluorescent tubes and neon lamps, bulbs, spray cans, batteries, medical waste, soiled textiles, consumables, etc.
